According to Wikipedia: Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results
It’s all about traffic
Keep in mind that traffic is the holy grail to almost everything done online. Optimizing you blog/site for search engines will help them index your content better and hence help to achieve better rankings for your site.
